"I came across your site and just wanted to say that about 20 years ago I bought a couple of trolleys of plants from you, every one of them did well and they now look wonderful. Incidentally, Feijoa sellowiana is always said to be only half hardy but mine has been growing outside in Essex ever since and is now fifteen feet tall and fruits beautifully each year. Many thanks for all the plants. "

RHS Recommended Lecture - The National Magnolia Collection

THE NATIONAL MAGNOLIA COLLECTION

FRIDAY 15TH MARCH 2013

Lecture by Charles Williams

Suitable for Complete Beginners, Ideal for All, with no prior experience necessary, however all garden lovers would benefit from this interesting lecture.

This lecture will cover why it is important to have a National Collection.  Magnolias to suit different types of garden. The breeding and selection of new varieties of Magnolia.  Examples of new magnolia hybrids all over the world.

The Caerhays collection contains 50 + species and over 450 named hybrids.  We will detail:

  • The very rare Magnolia nitida
  • The newly named Magnolia 'FJ Williams' (sargentia robusta x diva)
  • The extraordinary Magnolia 'Yuchelia' (Magnolia cross Michelia)

The tour will cover the whole garden and ignore the regular routes that visitors would normally take when visiting the gardens.  So it is a real 'behind the bushes' tour.  It will also encompass the new 10 acre Magnolia planting in a greenfield site at the top of the garden (known as Kennel Close) which was open to the public for the first time in 2012.

This lecture takes place around the gardens so some of areas are not suitable for disabled access, but most of the tour is accessible.

You will need to bring wet weather clothes and boots.

You can park in the main Caerhays car park at the Castle itself, rather than in the in public car park at Porthluney Beach.

Coffee & Biscuits – 9.30

Lecture starts – 10am

Finish approx. – 1pm

Lunch is not included in the price but meals are available in the licensed tea rooms within the castle.
