Gardens are open until the 5th of June, and our competition ends then.
All winning photographers will receive a year’s membership of the newly-formed Friends of Caerhays scheme and a plant of their choice up to £25 in value.
The overall winner will also enjoy bed and breakfast for two in the five-star Vean, which nestles in the peaceful countryside of the Caerhays estate.
Second-placed entrants in each of the three categories will receive a plant of their choice to the value of £25.
See below for competition guidelines.
The flower displays promise to be more colourful and varied than ever this year and the vistas of the woodlands, castle and estate offer endless ideas.
Winning photographs will be offered for publication in local newspapers and magazines and mounted in an exhibition at Caerhays Castle in the 2013 season. They will also appear on our website.
Caerhays maintains one of the country’s national collections of magnolias, many of which are now in bloom.
“Caerhays Castle and gardens are both internationally significant in their own way and we receive many visitors from afar. We expect to see some memorable images entered into the competition. Judging is likely to be quite challenging,” said Lucinda Rimmington, marketing manager for Caerhays.
The competition is one of a range of initiatives designed to encourage local people to discover the natural beauty and the historical and architectural heritage of Caerhays.
Owner Charles Williams is keen to raise awareness of the castle and gardens, which, he says, have been hidden jewels for too long.
“There is a constant process of discovery going on, which is confirming what an important and strategic role Caerhays has played in the political and cultural history of Cornwall and of England. There is so much to inspire our visitors.”
An extended and improved path network has improved access to many parts of the gardens, which have been extended this season.
A particular draw this year will be yellow varieties of magnolia – two in particular. ‘Yellow bird’ and ‘yellow fever’ – have been carefully nurtured and have now reached a height of around 20ft.
