May Herbaceous Border Tips

New growth on Dahliasclick for larger image
Check any tubers of Dahlias for emerging growth and start controlling slug and snail attack around them. Now is also the time to plant out any newly acquired plants or tubers. They are greedy feeders and respond to a good dressing of rotted compost or manure.

The same rules apply to Cosmos atrosanguineus.

If you have planted bulbs of Allium giganteum or any of its cultivars, a mass of leaves will appear with a flower spike in the centre. As the flower spike grows and comes into flower it is quite natural for the foliage to start going brown at the tips and die away.

If planting out Eremurus (Foxtail Lilies) they do prefer plenty of light and space around them leaving the crown just above the surface, spreading and covering the octopus like roots.

Keep clumps of daffodils and other spring bulbs fed with a foliar liquid feed or bone meal, whilst the foliage is still green. Do not remove foliage until it has died down.

Clumps of Amaryllis belladonna and Nerine bowdenii are best not disturbed too often but they do like their bulbs “baked” by as much sun as possible.
