There are a few key plants which flower now which must be deadheaded immediately after flowering or they will die from the efforts of producing large seed heads and not reappear next year.  In this category are Candelabra Primula, Icelandic Poppies, Meconopsis and, to a lesser extent other Papaver.  

If the weather turns wet and humid you may find that Rose flowers get attacked with powdery mildew infections.  Remove any infected blooms at once and regularly remove any flowers and sprays which are over to avoid the problem getting any worse.

If you have a steep bank in your garden which is impossible to weed regularly and often looks a mess the solution is to grow one of the most vigorous of all ground cover plants – Rubus tricolor or Rubus ‘Betty Ashburner’.  These forms of the Korean raspberry grow exponentially and quickly smother all weeds. They also produce delicious yellow raspberries in August-September.

Dahlias will be emerging from the ground now.  You need to repel slugs and snails every fortnight or so to avoid disaster.
