July Amateur Gardener Tips

The bushy Escallonias e.g. ‘Apple Blossom’ and ‘Pride of Donard’ can be either hard pruned or pruned to shape immediately after flowering.

Choisya ternata and its cultivars e.g. ‘Sundance’ can be pruned into shape before they put on their new growth.

The French Lavandula stoechas and its cultivars can have the fading blooms taken off and should produce a further crop of bloom.

Callistemons are best pruned immediately after flowering, right back to wood behind the flower spikes.  New growth will then produce flowers next year.  This applies to container grown or open ground plants.

Fuchsias in containers or open ground should be kept well watered and feed them every 2 weeks.
They often perform best in light shade.

Wisterias can be summer pruned now by cutting the long trailing buds back to 4”-6” from the main stems.  The wood on these should then ripen to produce flowering spurs for next year.

Actinidia chinensis (Kiwi Fruit) can be pruned in a similar way to the Wisteria.
