August Amateur Gardener Tips

Fuchsia Riccartoniiclick for larger image
Fuchsia Riccartonii grown as a hedge can be trimmed after its first flush of flower and should produce a further display in 2-3 weeks.

Hedges of Escallonia can be trimmed or pruned immediately after flowering.  This will produce fresh young growth which will harden up and ripen before the winter.

Cistus can be pruned into shape as they finish flowering.

The Mount Etna Broom (Genista aetnensis) – one of the best summer shrubs, should be coming into bloom.  Make sure it is well staked if necessary and does not “rock” on its roots.

Quick growing plants e.g. Lavatera, will have produced their first flower spikes which would be fading.  Cut these back to where secondary spikes are already emerging.

Permanent plants in containers should be regularly fed to produce flowers with a high potash fertiliser but their foliage and growth might also need a boost with a high nitrogen feed.
