RHS Lectures at Caerhays Castle in 2010

Unless stated differently on individual descriptions all lectures commence at 10.00 am sharp. Coffee/Tea will be served from 9.30 am onwards. RHS Members - £30.00, Non-members - £37.00 per lecture (includes buffet lunch & wine)

Lecture 1
EVERGREEN OAKS AND CHAMPION TREES AT CAERHAYS- FRIDAY 5TH MARCH 2010

All attendees will be given a full list of the 50 evergreen quercus and lithocarpus at Caerhays together with a list of the 80 Champion Trees.
Rarities will include:-

1. Lithocarpus pachyphyllus
2. Quercus oxyodon
3. Podocarpus salignus

Lecture 2
THE PLANT HERITAGE NATIONAL COLLECTION OF MAGNOLIAS AT CAERHAYS – FRIDAY 12TH MARCH 2010

All attendees will be given a full list of all the Magnoliacae in the Caerhays collection.
Special interest magnolias include:-

1. Magnolia ‘Caerhays Belle’
2. Magnolia nitida
3. Magnolia ‘Philip Tregunna’

Lecture 3
MAGNOLIAS BY JIM GARDINER – FRIDAY 19TH MARCH 2010

THIS IS THE FORMAL LAUNCH OF A NEW COFFEE TABLE BOOK ON THE CAERHAYS ESTATE AND GARDENS.
START OF LECTURE – 11.00 a.m.

AFTER LECTURE ATTENDEES ARE INVITED TO JOIN THE PRESS LAUNCH AT A LUNCH AND DRINKS IN THE MAIN CASTLE ROOMS.

JIM GARDINER AND CHARLES WILLIAMS WILL LEAD A GARDEN TOUR AFTER LUNCH.

Lecture 4
CAMELLIA, MAGNOLIA AND RHODODENDRON HYBRIDS RAISED AT CAERHAYS – FRIDAY 26TH MARCH 2010

Attendees will be given lists of these hybrids. The history and origins of the hybrids will be discussed especially the x williamsii camellia story.

Special interest plants will include:-

1. Magnolia ‘Caerhays Surprise’
2. Camellia ‘J.C. Williams’
3. Rhododendron ‘Crossbill’

Lecture 5
THE PODOCARPUS COLLECTION AT CAERHAYS – FRIDAY 9TH APRIL 2010

Attendees will be given a full list of the species and hybrids in the collection for which it is planned to apply for National Collection status with Plant Heritage in the near future.

Rarities/Special interest plants:-

1. Podocarpus salignus
2. Podocarpus henkelii
3. Podocarpus ‘Country Park Fire’

Lecture 6
YELLOW MAGNOLIAS IN THE PLANT HERITAGE NATIONAL MAGNOLIA COLLECTION – FRIDAY 16TH APRIL 2010

The gathering pace of hybredisation work with yellow magnolias means that the magnolia season now extends well into April and May. Several of the new and still relatively unknown yellow magnolias will be featured.

1. Magnolia ‘Yellow Bird’
2. Magnolia ‘Daphne’
3. Magnolia ‘Yellow Lantern’

Lecture 7
SCENTED RHODODENDRONS AT CAERHAYS – FRIDAY 7TH MAY 2010

This lecture will concentrate on the ‘smellie’ species and hybrids which, although often short-lived and tender, do bring amazing scent to the garden.

1. Rhododendron sino nuttalii
2. Rhododendron ‘Fragrantissimum’
3. Rhododendron ‘Lady Alice Fitzwilliam’

Lecture 8
MORE UNUSUAL SUMMER FLOWERING TREES AND SHRUBS AT CAERHAYS – FRIDAY 25TH JUNE 2010

Spring woodland gardens may be past their best by early June but there are still plenty of unusual plants in flower. These are often overlooked but can greatly extend the flowering season. The gardens at Caerhays are formally shut in June so few will have had the opportunity to see these plants in flower.

1. Stewartia pseudocamellia
2. Styrax japonica ‘Pink Chimes’
3. Rhododendron weyrichii
4. Catalpa duclouxii

Those attending RHS lectures may drive up from Porthluney Beach car park and park alongside the castle

All tickets should normally be booked in advance. For tickets to RHS events at Caerhays only please book in the following ways:-

By POST: Events booking, Cheryl Kufel, Estate Office, Caerhays, St. Austell Cornwall PL26 6LY enclosing a cheque payable to F J Williams Estate, a membership number (where relevant) and daytime telephone number. State the title of the event and how many tickets you require.
