Inspiration for January 2018
Jobs in the Garden...
The garden starts to wake up from its winter hibernation and the first harbingers of spring begin to break cover. There is always a race to find which is the first x williamsii camellia to come into full flower. ‘St Ewe’ and ‘J C Williams’ normally win but usually the first flowers on Camellias ‘Muskoka’, ‘Mary Jobson’ and ‘Monica Dance’ will appear by the middle of the month.
Frost permitting, and even between cold spells, Camellia ‘Water Lily’ and Camellia ‘Pink Icicle’ will continue on in full flower having usually started well before Christmas in Cornwall.
We've featured some of these wonderful Camellias below.
Scent also from the first Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’ on the raised nursery beds. Plenty of things which you could plant now to enjoy next January and admire from a warm indoors. Get the fleece out to protect your plants if it gets really cold.
Plant of the Month
The Plant of the Month is, without doubt, Daphne bholua ‘Jacqueline Postill’. Our best plant, situated beside the nursery entrance, comes into its full scented splendour when the weather is most drab and depressing. A few degrees of frost will not touch it! Your visiting neighbours will all ask you what is that amazing smell?
