Herbaceous - spreading, clump-forming perennial. Oblong-lance-shaped, prickly, dark-green leaves to 45cm (18in) long, softly hairy beneath. Tall, branching plant from rosettes in early spring. Produces thistle-like flowerheads 3cm (1¼in) across.
