  • Good to know - planted in Britain since the 16th century or before, probably for the edible fruits which were made into preserves. Wildlife plant - nectar and pollen for insects.
  • Pests & Diseases - none.
  • Place of Origin - Europe and western Asia.
  • Hardy - very cold winter - Hardy in all of UK and northern Europe. Plant can possibly withstand temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F)
  • Height - 5m (15ft)
  • Spread - 5m (15ft)
  • Deciduous - oval, dark-green leaves to 10cm (4in) long turning red-purple in autumn.
  • Tall Shrub - vigorous, spreading shrub or small tree. Fleshy, oblong, red fruit is produced in summer.
  • Full Sun - shelter from cold winds.
  • Partial Shade
  • fertile well drained soil - humus rich.
  • Neutral to acid soil
