  • Good to know - the native hazel. 'Lambstails' are the long, male catkins. Pliant hazel rods have been used by man since prehistoric times. Makes very good artist's charcoal. Wildlife plant. Food for more than 70 species of insect. Bird plant.
  • Pests & Diseases - caterpillars, mites, sawflies, aphids.
  • Place of Origin - Europe, Turkey.
  • Hardy - very cold winter - Hardy in all of UK and northern Europe. Plant can possibly withstand temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F)

  • Deciduous - broadly heart-shaped, toothed, mid-green leaves to 10cm (4in) long.
  • Tall Shrub - tree-like shrub. Pendent yellow catkins 4-6cm (1½ - 2½in) long appear in late winter and early spring. Edible nuts in autumn.
