  • Good to know - named after the Director of Tilden Botanic Gardens, Berkley, California.
  • Pests & Diseases - fungal leaf spot
  • Place of Origin - western USA.
  • Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)
  • Height and Spread - 4m (12ft)
  • Evergreen - dark, sea-green leaves to 8cm (3in) long.
  • Tall Shrub - dense, upright shrub or small tree. Dense clusters of silver-grey catkins to 20cm (8in) or more.
  • Full Sun - shelter from cold winds in frosty areas
  • Partial Shade
  • fertile well drained soil
  • Broadly columnar
