IRIS unguicularis

Commonly known as Algerian iris



(syn. Stylosa) - clear blue winter flowering iris

  • Good to know - does not need feeding or soil improvement. The older and more congested the clump becomes the better it flowers.
  • Pests & Diseases - slugs, snails.
  • Place of Origin - Greece, western and southern Turkey, western Syria, Tunisia, Algeria.
  • Hardy - cold winter - Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
  • Height - 30cm (12in)
  • Spread - 10-50cm (4-20in)
  • Bulb/Corm - Bulb/Corm or rhizomatous perennial - vigorous, rhizomatous, beardless perennial. Large flowers 5-8cm (2-3in) across are produced on very short stems
  • Evergreen - tough, grasslike leaves to 60cm (24in) long.
  • Herbaceous - Early in the year, typically January till end of March, herbaceous plants might be supplied in 9cm pots to ensure timely despatch.
  • Against a wall
  • Full Sun
  • Scented flowers
  • Neutral to Alkaline Soil
  • well drained, dry, poor to moderately fertile soil - thrives in a dry, stony soil.
  • Caution, toxic if eaten, may cause skin allergy or irritant - These plants are toxic if eaten and may also cause a skin allergy, rash, irritation to eyes and skin.
