Deciduous - diamond-shaped, glossy, mid- to dark-green leaves to 8cm (3in) long turn yellow in autumn.
Tree - tree with shaggy, red-brown bark, peeling in layers when young and becoming fissured with age. Yellow-brown male catkins to 8cm (3in) long in early spring.
