PLANTING IN COASTAL AND WINDSWEPT SITUATIONS – FRIDAY 15TH APRIL 2011

Lecture by Charles Williams

Charles is a regular lecturer at horticultural events in the UK. He is also the senior partner of Burncoose Nurseries and manages Caerhays Estate

Areas covered will be how to create a garden a windy or coastal situation, the use of windbreaks to filter the wind, suitable plants for salt spray and strong winds. The lecture will include slides showing some of the difficult gardens created by Burncoose in coastal locations and a tour of the extremities of Burncoose gardens to view the use of different windbreaks in differnt contexts.

Areas of Special interest will include:-
1. The use of Cornish Lath windbreaks
2. Use of more unusual species as windbreaks\hedging plants :- olearia, camellia, griselinia, tamarisk, hippophae, muehlenbeckia, bay and laurel.

Lecture starts at 2.00pm

Coffee/Tea will be served from 1.30 pm onwards. RHS Members - £12.00, Non-members - £14.50
