Cornwall is a walker’s paradise, offering, as it does, a truly staggering range of landscapes and habitats, fascinating history and geological wonders. The South West Coast path includes in its 630 miles, the whole of the Cornish coast; there is a range of local path networks and a base of inter-connecting trails clearly identifiable in the reliable Ordnance Survey maps and which are equally clearly described in a number of dedicated guide books. Paul Simmons has capitalised on this rich heritage and – in his adopted county – has established a guided walks business which is now operating in conjunction with one of Cornwall’s foremost, five-star bed and breakfast venues. The Vean is a restored Georgian house where good food, personal service and luxurious accommodation all come as part of the package. It is set at the heart of the historic, peaceful and beautiful Caerhays estate. This superb rural retreat is surrounded by woodlands, gardens and coastline, all professionally managed with a strong emphasis on landscape and wildlife conservation. Also within the grounds is Caerhays Castle – the home of the Williams family – and a building which has played an important role in Cornish history. All this within easy driving distance of Truro, Falmouth, Mevagissey and St. Mawes. A five-night walking break at The Vean includes three days of informative guided walks with one day off for total relaxation or other activities.* This is walking with a difference.
Each tour starts once breakfast is over – served in the Vean’s impressive dining room. Transport and guide appear at the door and after a brief introduction to the day’s excursion, the journey begins. It would be wrong to describe these seven to eight-mile walks as easy-going. No matter what route you choose, Cornwall is going to put a hill or two and some tricky terrain beneath your feet. But the guide encourages a gentle pace. An average of one and a half to two miles an hour is what they aim to achieve. And that makes these walks achievable by and enjoyable for experienced and not-so-experienced walkers alike. There are frequent stops at viewpoints or places of special interest where Paul – with the aid of maps and well-researched local knowledge – explains the significance of landscape features, the history of particular buildings or describes the local flora and fauna. He describes the process as putting together the pieces of a jigsaw, or identifying the many layers that make up Cornwall. Its legends, its maritime history, botany and methodism – all have a place in the day’s commentary and discussion.
The walks are based on and around Falmouth – the county’s largest town. It is an impressive and historic town at the mouth of the River Fal and is the gateway to miles of wooded creeks, to beaches, estuaries and coastline. Lunch is an important part of the day. It’s a nutritious affair, packed with energy-rich fare including sandwiches with flair. It was a brie and grape filling on my day. The lunch boxes are distributed at the start of the walk so each carries his or her own. Later in the day – depending on the route taken – there’s a real treat to enjoy. Our guide speeds ahead to collect the ingredients for afternoon tea on the beach. Various flavours and types of tea – or coffee – are all available and freshly-made, to be supped (along with a biscuit or two) with a glorious backdrop of sparkling sea and wide stretches of sandy beach and dunes.
For some, the walk can finish there and then. Those who want to carry on an extra two miles can leave their haversacks with the guide and continue unencumbered. Walking done, a gentle stroll around the destination village to buy postcards and souvenirs. Then back in the transport to The Vean where a shower or deep bath and three-course dinner await; then more relaxation with a book, or watching television and finally to a great big bed and crisp white sheets. It is a pampered break based on memorable walks, good company and unashamed luxury. Definitely, walking with a difference! *Which could include a tour of the castle and/or gardens.
