Having festive fun

A stall from last year's fair

The 2011 Caerhays Christmas Fair will entice visitors with a magical mix of entertainment and seasonal delights.

All profit from the two-day programme on the 1st and 2nd December will go to the Merlin Project, which supports the Cornwall Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre.

This seasonal celebration will be staged at The Vean – the restored Georgian lodge at the heart of the Caerhays estate - which provides a superb festive setting.

Over the two days there will be a great range of activities, demonstrations and events that visitors can join in with or they can simply relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

It is a programme designed to feature something for all members of the family and to offer lots of opportunities for pre-Christmas fun.

The event kicks off with the fair on Thursday, 1st December. Both inside The Vean and in a large marquee, around 35 stallholders will be promoting and selling their wares – all with Christmas in mind.

The Vean will be transformed into a festive market square, where visitors will find plenty of inspiration for Christmas gifts: hand-made cards and table decorations, textiles and pottery, books, prints and clothes; bags, scarves and cushions – all together providing a colourful, quality collection.

In the marquee, plants, food and drink will predominate, with fine products from many parts of Cornwall, including cakes, preserves, cheeses, puddings and sauces.

Day two will be a day of action! But with relaxed overtones.

A wreath-making workshop will cost £15 and give participants the chance to create something natural and colourful to decorate their homes with  - and at a highly competitive price!

All the greenery will be provided fresh from the Caerhays estate.

A  workshop for children will give them the skills for making canvas pictures and they can also sit and enjoy a story-telling session.

Carols around a decorated tree, with mince pies and mulled wine will complete the festive programme.

Also available throughout both days will be freshly-made sweet and savoury crepes and there will be a bar serving soft and alcoholic drinks.

Charles Williams, owner of the Caerhays estate, says the Merlin Project was chosen as beneficiary of this year’s Christmas Fair for a variety of good reasons.

“The charity does excellent work in this county, where the incidence of MS is one of the highest in the country and we are pleased to support it for that reason.

“And the Cornwall MS Therapy Centre is just down the road at Hewas Water, so we are giving direct support to a neighbour.

“Caerhays has been an integral part of the local community for many centuries and that tradition continues today.

“I hope everything will be well supported – it’s for a wonderful cause.”

Merlin Project communications manager, Ellie May, said:

“The Merlin Project is fundraises for Cornwall MS Therapy Centre and is not financially supported by the government so relies entirely on fundraising and grant donations. The support of both the local and wider community is paramount to its continuation.

“The centre provides a range of both orthodox and complementary therapies which include physiotherapy, reflexology, Bowen technique and massage.

“We rely so much on external support, the fact that Caerhays is able to help in this way is absolutely fantastic.”

Phase two of the centre, which opened in August 2010, has provided three separate therapy rooms as well as a conference room.
