September Conservatory & Greenhouse Tips

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia regina) can make large clumps and become pot-bound over a few years.  If you need to divide them either tip out or dig up the clump and cut through it with a sharp spade.  You can the re-pot or re-plant.  Do not divide into small pieces otherwise they may take years to start flowering again. The technique is similar to splitting herbaceous plants like the video below.

Hoyas may still be flowering or just finished.  Do not be tempted to cut off the old flowers, just let them drop off as they will flower from the same point next year.

Stephanotis floribunda flower over a long period but do not over water.  Keep the main shoots trained in but trailing shoots off the main stems can be pruned back to 6-inches to form flowering spurs.

Bomarea caldasii, best described as the climbing Alstroemeria, should be kept in growth until it naturally dies back.  After the flowers it produces quite decorative seed pods.

As the Autumn progresses reduce watering on any succulent plants.
