We now catch and retain 160,000 gallons of rainwater from various roofs on the farm providing water to all the farm’s cattle overwintered in sheds and also, in the summer, grazing in nearby fields (one tank is also portable to fields with no water) rather than using increasingly expensive mains water.

Recycling rainwater in this way also prevents dirty water runoff into the water table and streams from the farmyard and is therefore very environmentally friendly. This is a very simple solution to a very common farm overhead.
Caerhays has also implemented a new project with the help of the Environment Agency, Natural England and the Catchment Sensitive Grant Scheme to source and recycle river water (rather than mains water) to feed troughs in a number of fields on the Home Farm using a new system. More details soon of what we hope will be a model for many others to follow.
