Scented Rhododendrons
Bring all scented Rhododendrons into the greenhouse now to protect them from Winter frosts. Evergreen azaleas in pots are also best over wintered under glass. All these plants need a moist atmosphere and must not be allowed to dry out or be saturated in case of freezing.
Greenhouse Heaters
Check that your greenhouse heater actually works before the first frosts. Oil heaters may well be rusty and need cleaning while the elements in electric fan heaters often break when first turned on. However, even if a blow heater produces no heat, cold air circulation is a good way of maintaining temperatures just above freezing.
Planting Spring Bulbs.
Now is the time to plant prepared Hyacinths, Narcissus ‘Paper White’ and ‘Grand Solil D’Or’ in containers. Plant the bulbs in pots and stand in a cool sheltered area in the dark, cover them to a depth of 1”-2” with sharp sand or grit and forget about them until December. Tulips and Crocus may be treated in the same way.
Cleaning for winter
To reduce build ups of pests and diseases next year make sure everything is scrupulously clean and that all dead leaves and other plant material are cleared out. Good ventilation and air circulation especially when the weather is warm or wet will inhibit fungal infections and foliage dampening off due to botrytis.
