One of the most important books on Cornish history to be written in modern times was published on 11th March.
The 100,000-word book features 677 pictures and illustrations and reveals a wealth of previously hidden history.
It is entitled Caerhays Castle and explores the history of the buildings, gardens, families and the whole estate.
As an historical record, the book is significant not only in Cornish but also in a national context. The home of a close friend of Henry VIII, it was an important mediaeval power base. The site still shows the remnants of that early and important fortified and all the later renovations can be traced, including the great mediaeval courtyard house.
Equally fascinating is the history of the gardens – of international significance. The families who have made Caerhays what it is today are traced in detail and there is the ongoing tale of the ‘lost’ mineral collection, soon to be revealed in all its glory.
Written by Caerhays owner Charles Williams, the book has been edited by architectural historian Stephen Tyrrrell.
“It is a wide ranging introduction to over a thousand years of history; it is also an enjoyable read, with sufficient variety of content to satisfy any reader,” says the author.
The 260-page volume has been printed in a limited edition in full colour throughout.
