Sedum sarcocule
This is a bushy, perennial succulent with fleshy stems and branches which we have found to be a useful and successful plant in coastal locations. It can grow well in a rockery or in gaps or on top of a stone faced hedge or earth bank. Despite originating from South Africa it has proved resistant to the sort of milder winters we get in Cornwall despite being left outside on the nursery over winter.
This plant enjoys full sun and a good baking. It grows well with other hardier succulents, and is a natural partner for Aeoniums. In colder areas it should be treated as a greenhouse plant and kept well fed during the growing season. It roots easily from stem or leaf cuttings.
C. sarcocaulis will achieve an overall height of around 12in with a similar spread. It has star shaped pink (or white) flowers over a long period in the summer but, sadly, these do not smell at all pleasant.
