Deschampsia Growing Guide

Growing Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldtau’

Tufted hair grass

This is a hardy, evergreen, tussock forming grass. It is perennial with rigid, linear, mid-green leaves of around 2 feet in length and is a very suitable subject to include in a mixed herbaceous or shrub border. The leaves are green but the graceful, arching panicles of long, glistening, bright, flowers or spikelets are silvery yellow. They become more yellow as they age and start more reddish brown.

D. cespitosa has a wide distribution in the wild across Eurasia and is fully hardy. The flower heads are excellent for flowers arrangements or they can be cut and dried and used in a similar way.

These plants grow best in damp, neutral to acid soil in sun or partial shade. The only care they need is for the old flower heads to be removed in spring before the new growth appears.

Propagation is easiest by division in the spring. These plants will often self-seed themselves profusely around and about existing clumps on bare soil.
