Evening Primrose, Sundrops
The Oenothera which we grow are perfectly hardy forms of Evening Primrose. The two species which we grow have flowers which open during the day and are very short lived. They grow and flower best in full sun in poorish soils and are best divided in the spring although softwood cuttings are also straightforward.
O. fruticosa ‘Fireworks’ is a popular herbaceous border plant with purple-brown flushed leaves and yellow flowers opening progressively from red buds. This variety will grow 2-3ft in height.
O. speciosa ‘Siskiyou’ is smaller growing at around 12in with a similar spread. The flowers are rose-pink shading to a white centre with a greenish throat. This is more of a rock garden plant which dislikes excessive wet over winter.
