June Inspiration

After the enthusiastic display of spring, the colours and scents of the garden and hedgerows can seem a little depleted in June. The garden pauses before the headlong rush of summer and everything can begin to look a little green. By choosing with pollinators in mind, not only can we introduce more colours into the "greenness" of June, we can also provide a nectar-rich food source for bees and butterflies. This is a hungry time for bees, when spring is over but summer not quite begun, "the June gap".

Garden herbs like lavender, thyme, sage and rosemary are excellent food sources as are other related plants like teucrium and phlomis. Herbaceous geraniums and simple daisy-like flowers are also good choices. Cotoneaster is a particular favourite of bees and we get the added bonus of berries in autumn.
Some of the earlier flowering perennials could well do with tidying by now. Removing old leaves will allow fresh growth to come through as well as improving their health and appearance. Later in the month, hardy geraniums and delphiniums can be cut back to encourage a second flowering and it is a good idea to check that supports are in place for taller growing perennials and to add reinforcement if necessary.
