May Monthly Inspiration

Amid such a crescendo of flowering and in the build up to the Chelsea Flower Show later in the month let us just pick out a few more unusual May flowering plants to whet the appetite.  We will be at Chelsea in the Grand Pavillion as usual, come and say hello!

Stewartia rostrata – in our opinion this produces the finest flowers of any of the Stewartia species and supersedes the much better known Stewartia pseudocamellia. S. rostrata has pink buds opening into large white flowers blotched and edged with pink. Beautiful autumn colour too.

Styrax formosanus var. formosanus is the most floriferous of the Styrax species. Literally thousands of scented hanging flowers all over the small tree which will be covered with bees enjoying the nectar.

Enkianthus campanulatus ‘Victoria’ has clusters of red bells and is best grown on a bank so that you can look up at the flowers of this little known but spectacular genus.

Rhododendron loderi ‘Pink Diamond’ produces enormous scent which drifts yards away from the plant with its huge pinkish flowers. Quite the best thing in any sheltered woodland garden in May.

Weather permitting you will hopefully see all of these on our Chelsea stand alongside some of the newer and more exciting herbaceous plants listed in our full mail order catalogue:

Lupinus ‘Manhattan Lights’ with its mixed colours is quite a showstopper and is also our banner for this month!

Hakonechloa 'All Gold' - mounds of soft golden foliage to brighten up a shady corner

Heucherella ‘Sweet Tea’ with its orange lobed leaves flushed with maroon – an exciting colour combination

Also of course last year’s finalist from the RHW Chelsea Plant Of The Year: Acer palmatum ‘Metamorphosa’
