August Monthly Inspiration

August is the month in which Eucryphias come into their own as the best show in the woodland garden or shrub border. Eucryphias are evergreen shrubs from Tasmania, South Australia and Chile. They are perfectly hardy and easy to grow in reasonably sheltered locations where their roots are in damp/loamy soil which does not dry out.

The most stunning show here in the gardens at Burncoose is Eucryphia x nymansensis ‘Nymansay’. It grows quickly with an erect, columnar, and multi stemmed habit and is plastered in large white flowers with conspicuous stamens in August and on into September. Bees and butterflies congregate to enjoy its nectar. It is undoubtedly the most popular of the Eucryphias which we offer.

If you are looking for a species which has a smaller growing or more dwarfish habit then Eucryphia milliganii may be the one to try or Eucryphia ‘Pink Cloud’ with its pale pink margined flowers.

Some of your more conventional hydrangeas may be well past their best with changing or fading flower colours by August especially in this early flowering year. We find that Hydrangea paniculata ‘Vanille Fraise’ only really starts to flower here in late July. By August the long pointed white flower heads start to turn pink and then red. A startling and unusual transformation which you can enjoy.

Some of the Hydrangea quercifolia varieties only really put on their best show in August too. ‘Snowflake’ and ‘Snow Queen’ have enormous greenish, then white flower heads and, towards the end of the month, hints of the spectacular orange-red autumn colours begin to appear.17.50ech snow available later in autumn
