January Monthly Inspiration
News and Gardening Tips
In Cornwall this is the month when the nursery and gardens fill with the scent of Daphne bholua varieties. They surprise you with their early flowering even in coldish spells where frost is on the ground. With us some are semi deciduous although they can retain all their leaves in a mild spell. Last year the Beast from the East in March defoliated many of them completely but, by then, most of the flowers were over. The plants took a hit but new growth soon emerged and you should not think of these plants as tender if given some wind protection from the north or east.
This year we have large plants on offer of the staggeringly beautiful and floriferous Daphne bholua 'Limpsfield' which is quite a rarity. Those of you who have not tried these plants before might adopt the ever popular Daphne bholua 'Jacqueline Postill' or Daphne bholua 'Darjeeling' or the new Daphne bholua 'Mary Rose'. More information about how to grow Daphnes can be found in our Daphne care article.
This year’s new 65 page mail order catalogue contains hundreds of exciting new plants to try in your own garden. It will be sent out early January, so if by mid January you haven’t received one you can order up a paper copy online to be sent to you or download the whole thing as a PDF. Remember we will need your postal address to send you one!
Cheer up a drab January by ordering something new for your garden or conservatory. Helleborus 'Penny’s Pink' is a real winner or Helleborus 'Anna's Red' and Acacia dealbata has a wonderful scent and is easy to grow.
