June Monthly Inspiration
After another ‘virtual Chelsea’ in May where we were unable to showcase there many of the new introductions into our 2021 mail order catalogue it is perhaps time to remind everyone about just a few of them which will be at their best in the garden in June.
Woodland gardens still have much to admire as the spring season comes towards its end. It is by no means ‘over’ just yet.
June is the month to see aesculus species in flower. This genus only has around 20 individual species and A. mutabilis ‘Induta’ is certainly one of the best. A slow growing large shrub here rather than a tree and plastered in upright flowers which are apricot in colour with yellow markings. One of the highlights of the last Chelsea in 2019.
Of all the styrax which we grow Styrax japonicus ‘Emerald Pagoda’ (‘Sohuksan’) is a superb variety, originating from Korea, it has the largest white bell-shaped flowers of any named variety of S. japonicus. They literally coat the undersides of the branches from which they hang in profusion. Lovely yellow autumn colour as well.
A standout garden shrub in June is Calycanthus 'Venus' which grows to only 6-8ft tall in maturity with us. The flowers are white with yellow and purple central markings.
