September Monthly Inspiration

One of the great joys of September are Hedychiums or Ginger Lilies. Just when the herbaceous border is starting to look tired, over for the year, and in need of tidying there are a few autumn flowering rhizomes and bulbs which make a wonderful impact in what we all hope will turn into an Indian summer in September.

Hedychium gardnerianum, one of the easiest Ginger Lilies to grow, has fragrant butterfly yellow flowers which fade to white. Hedychium densiflorum ‘Assam Orange’ has dense bottlebrush-like racemes of flowers. Both grow with us in expanding clumps to 4-5ft in height. You will not yet find these two in our catalogue but you will find Hedychium greenii with salmon-red butterfly flowers which are so attractive to butterflies as well as H. aurantiacum and H. flavum. We intend to offer more forms of these spectacular gingers from next spring.

With us some of the Crinum powellii in both white and pink forms have been out for a few days while others are only just producing their 2-3ft tall flower spikes. The large clumps of lightish green leaves have looked a bit dull up to now and the slugs have made their usual contribution. However, set in a border along with Amaryllis belladonna and Nerine bowdenii, suddenly you have a spectacular new phase of colour in the garden perhaps set alongside clumps of asters which are also often at their best in September. What a combination Aster frikartii ‘Monch’ and Nerine bowdenii ‘Pink Triumph’ make together!

The first hints of yellowish autumn colour too on Acer rufinerve and Corylopsis pauciflora in the woodland garden. Perhaps alongside the September flowering Hoheria sextylosa ‘Stardust’ and Eucryphia lucida x cordifolia. There is always something new to see in a shrubbery just when you think everything has finished flowering.

Magnolia grandiflora ‘Kay Parris’ and ‘Little Gem’ have had flowers for a couple of months but they stand out more in September and seem to smell even better in the evenings.
