May Monthly Inspiration

After a colder than usual April with late frosts throughout the country and, for once, an alarming lack of rain we can hopefully look forward to May without browned off magnolia blooms and blackened rhododendron flowers.

As we move further into our happy escape from lockdowns and can visit nurseries and gardens again for pleasure rather than just exercise there is, sadly, one key thing still missing. The Chelsea Flower Show is again not happening in May this year and is currently rescheduled for mid-September.

Our show tunnel at Burncoose is stocked with late spring and early summer flowering trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants. As we have explained to the RHS it is simply not possible for us to mount our usual Chelsea display in September. We are not alone as nurserymen in coming to this rather sad but realistic decision.

Instead, we can remind you of what you would have seen this month on the Burncoose Nurseries stand at Chelsea.

Magnolia wilsonii – this is a large spreading shrub with pendant saucer shaped white flowers with deep crimson stamens. Best grown on a bank where you can look up into the hanging flowers.

Magnolia sieboldii – egg shaped buds and nodding, fragrant, white flowers which turn outwards to face you as they open. A multi-stemmed bush which will present the odd flower long into summer followed by bright crimson seedpods.

We are delighted that the woodland gardens at Burncoose and Caerhays Castle have now been fully open for visitors to enjoy for a while. If you are holidaying in Cornwall this summer do please pay us both a visit and see rather more than you would have at Chelsea.  Caerhays in last week of April was looking particularly good for rhododendrons and scent is still amazing.

Quite whether the Hampton Court flower show will go ahead as planned in early July remains to be seen. This may well be the only flower show this year where we will meet many of our customers.
