February Monthly Inspiration

Some months of the year seem to have a particular colour when it comes to plants and February has a decidedly yellow note. From daffodil to primrose, hazel to witch hazel, yellow is very much the order of the day. However, look a little closer and we soon find other colours are available.

Hamamelis is one of the most popular of winter flowering shrubs with many cultivars to choose from. From palest yellow through to darkest red, who could resist their dainty flowers and delicious perfume? The crinkled petals curl up tightly on cold mornings, gently unfurling as the day's warmth returns. Hamamelis Aphrodite is deservedly sort-after with richly coloured scented flowers of deepest orange and autumn leaf colour too.

Some rather less well-known relatives of Hamamelis also flower in winter. The resemblance is fairly easy to spot for Parrotia, Distylium and Loropetalum, as they have very similar looking flowers.

For Corylopsis and Fothergilla the resemblance is not quite so clear though they share other features such as scent and autumn leaf colour.

February is a really good time to plant new shrubs and trees and it's still not too late to move established ones. Ideally, larger plants are best moved while dormant to minimise stress and in February the soil should be beginning to warm up. Don't try to plant if the soil is frozen. It's not good for you or the plants. Also, harden off newly purchased items beforehand and bear in mind their hardiness rating and the likely weather conditions still to come.

Have a browse through our February sale if you need tempting back into the garden. And if it looks like it's all yellow, that's just the cold playing tricks on you!!
