September Inspiration
There are relatively few September flowering trees and shrubs but the Southern hemisphere Hoherias from New Zealand are an exception. There are five main species of Hoheria but it is the different forms of Hoheria sexstylosa which are at their very best now in Burncoose Gardens and in the nursery.
Hoherias are evergreen large shrubs or small trees which enjoy being grown in full sun. In milder areas of the country they grow quickly and flower at a very early age. Most of the plants we will supply should have some flowers and are certainly of flowering size. In colder parts of the county Hoherias should be given protection from cold and East winds, if possible, and perhaps grown up against a sunny wall.
Hoherias do not require especially fertile soil and will grow well in neutral or alkaline soils providing they are well drained. They have a graceful and pendulous habit which allows them to display their flowers to full effect. On a sunny day your flowering Hoheria will be covered in bees and insects.
