6th January 2021. In line with the current government lockdown rules, Burncoose Nurseries is closed to visitors. However at present we are able to offer click and collect to local customers. This will be weekdays only, not weekends. Mail order is continuing as normal. However please allow extra time for the couriers to deliver, once despatched from us. Handsome tall medicinal shrub with snow white flowers in midsummer and damson-like fruits

  • Deciduous - opposite, usually elliptic, glossy leaves 4-10cm (1½-4in) long. Leaves are green above, whitish, hairy beneath, turning yellow in autumn.
  • White
  • Height - 3m (10ft)
  • Spread - 3m (10ft)
  • Tall Shrub - or small tree. Peeling, or deeply furrowed, bark. Flowers are so productive as to obscure the foliage. Birds eat the fruits.
  • Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)

  • Additional Features - Berries - These plants have berries.
  • Good to know - introduced into UK by Robert Fortune in 1845. Translates as snow flowers. Some plants have male or female flowers only and may not fruit.
  • Medicinal properties - the root was used, historically, for fever relief and more recently in jaundice treatment.

    Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Prune wayward or crossing branches to maintain a healthy framework.
    When: When dormant in the late winter/early spring. Some in the summer/autumn to prevent bleeding of sap.
