  • Evergreen - narrowly ovate, finely-toothed, light-green leaves 5-10cm (2-4in) long.
  • White
  • Height - 2-3m (6-10ft) Can be pruned to shape
  • Spread - 2m (6½ft)
  • Fruit - Plants which produce an edible or ornamental fruit
  • Tall Shrub - large shrub. Flowers, 4-5cm (1½-2in) across are produced singly, or in small cymes. Buds are purple- or red-tinted. Fruit is spherical, to 8cm (3in) long, rounder than a true lemon and orange-tinted when ripe.
  • Tender - cool or frost free greenhouse - Tolerant of low temperatures, but not surviving being frozen. Except in frost-free inner-city areas or coastal extremities requires glasshouse conditions. Plant can withstand temperatures down to 1°C (34°F)
  • Full sun
  • Additional Features - Good to know - - thought to be a cross between a true lemon and a mandarin or orange.
  • Pests & Diseases - under glass - red spider mite, scale, whiteflies, mealybug.
  • Place of origin - brought back from China by FN Meyer, US Dept. of Agriculture in 1908.
  • Flower Shape - Cup-shaped - - shallowly cup-shaped 4-5cm (1½-2in) across
  • Garden Location/Conditions - Greenhouse / conservatory - Not the sort of plants to be grown outside where there are likely to be frosts. These plants need to be grown in a conservatory or cool greenhouse or at least brought inside for the winter - loam based potting compost, full light, shade from hot sun

    Suitable for: Deciduous and evergreen trees, and some deciduous shrubs.
    Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Prune wayward or crossing branches to maintain a healthy framework.
    When: When dormant in the late winter/early spring. Some in the summer/autumn to prevent bleeding of sap.
