CORYLUS maxima 'Purpurea'

Commonly known as Hazel nut, Purple-leaf filbert



Deep purple foliage in full sun

  • Deciduous - heart-shaped leaves to 14cm (5½in) long.
  • Height - 6m (20ft)
  • Spread - 5m (16ft)
  • Tall Shrub - upright tree-like shrub. Pendent catkins 5-8cm (2-3in) long are purple-tinged as are fruit husks.
  • Hardy - very cold winter - Hardy in all of UK and northern Europe. Plant can possibly withstand temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F)
  • Full sun - for colour.
  • Additional Features - Good to know - native to the Balkans, these nuts were traditionally brought into churches on Aug 20th, St. Philibert's Day.
  • Pests & Diseases - squirrels, caterpillars, mites, sawflies, aphids .
  • Place of origin - south eastern Europe to Caucasus.
  • Hardiness - Fully hardy
  • Soil Conditions - Fertile well drained soil - does well in chalky soils.
  • Tree Shape - Rounded to broadly columnar
