Commonly known as Winter daphne
Fragrant with reddish-purple flowers
Evergreen - lance-shaped to narrowly oval, leathery, glossy dark-green leaves to 8cm (3in) long.
Purple - Shades of purple/mauve/lilac/violet - reddish purple
Height - 1.5m (5ft)
Spread - 1.5m (5ft)
Medium shrub - Typically grow to around 4-6 feet in height - rounded shrub. Flowers, mainly in terminal clusters of 10-15 or more, to 1.5cm (½in) across. Produces fleshy, red spherical fruit.
Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)
Caution, toxic if eaten, may cause skin allergy or irritant - These plants are toxic if eaten and may also cause a skin allergy, rash, irritation to eyes and skin.
Additional Features - Good to know - all daphnes resent transplanting.
Pests & Diseases - aphids, leaf spot, grey mould, viruses.
Place of origin - China, Japan.
Hardiness - Frost hardy (down to -5) -
Is Scented Plant - Scented flowers - very fragrant.
Soil Conditions - Fertile well drained soil - humus rich but not dry. Mulch to keep roots cool.
Neutral to alkaline soil - most prefer alkaline to slightly acid soils.
Wildlife - Bee friendly
