DICHROA febrifuga

Commonly known as Blue evergreen hydrangea, Chinese quinine

A rare hydrangea-like plant with starry blue or pink flowers with prominent stamens. Suitable for the greenhouse in colder areas

  • Evergreen - elliptic to ovate, toothed, hairless, papery leaves to 25cm (10in) long
  • Blue - blue or pink
  • Shades of pink - All shades of pink through to Carmine (red)
  • Height - 1.5m (5ft)
  • Spread - 1.5m (5ft)
  • Medium shrub - Typically grow to around 4-6 feet in height - produces flowers with 4-6 reflexed petals
  • Tender - cool or frost free greenhouse - Tolerant of low temperatures, but not surviving being frozen. Except in frost-free inner-city areas or coastal extremities requires glasshouse conditions. Plant can withstand temperatures down to 1°C (34°F)
  • Will grow outside in milder locations - This could include plants which would survive happily in a greenhouse or conservatory if not in a mild location. If you have a sheltered spot in your garden then it may do well here.

  • Additional Features - Good to know - - in commerce as X Didrangea versicolor. Natural hybrid. Can be flowered in a warm conservatory in winter
  • Medicinal properties - one of the 50 fundamental herbs in Chinese medicine. Used in treatment for fevers.
  • Place of origin - southern and southeastern Asia.
  • Flower Shape - Panicles - - compact panicles
  • Garden Location/Conditions - Greenhouse / conservatory - Not the sort of plants to be grown outside where there are likely to be frosts. These plants need to be grown in a conservatory or cool greenhouse or at least brought inside for the winter - use loam-based compost JI No. 2 or 3
  • Hardiness - Tender (greenhouse & conservatory) -
  • Pruning group - Pruning group 5
    Suitable for: Evergreen shrubs that require minimal pruning.
    Action: Trim or lightly cut back shoots that spoil symmetry. Deadhead regularly.
    When: Annually after flowering.
