EUONYMUS

Commonly known as Spindle tree

Genus of about 130 species of deciduous, semi-evergreen and evergreen shrubs, trees and climbers found mainly in woodland and thickets mainly in Asia.

Our UK native, E. europaeus, known for its red seed capsules and orange seeds,  is found mainly on chalk so absent in Scotland. The very hard wood was used for making skewers and spindles, hence the common name.

  • Deciduous - semi evergreen, and evergreen shrubs, trees and climbers
  • Full sun - or light shade --deciduous species more tolerant of dry soil. Shelter evergreens from cold winds.
  • Harmful if eaten - These will give you an upset tummy, so please don't eat any of these.
  • Additional Features - Good to know - grown for their foliage, autumn colour and ornamental fruits.
  • Pests & Diseases - caterpillars, vine weevil, scale insects, powdery mildew, leaf spot.
  • Place of origin - Asia
  • Soil Conditions - Alkaline / Chalk loving
  • Fertile well drained soil
