6th January 2021. In line with the current government lockdown rules, Burncoose Nurseries is closed to visitors. However at present we are able to offer click and collect to local customers. This will be weekdays only, not weekends.
Mail order is continuing as normal. However please allow extra time for the couriers to deliver, once despatched from us. Sorry to say that some depots are experiencing high volumes of traffic, also staff shortages.
FAGUS
Commonly known as Beech
Genus of 10 species of deciduous trees widely distributed in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere.
A tree whose leaf arrangement produces dense shade.
Generally accepted as native in southeastern UK and introduced further north and west.
Used to smoke Westphalian ham and in fermentation tanks for Budweiser beer.

Deciduous - oval to elliptic-oblong coarsely to finely toothed leaves.

Tree - flowers appear with the leaves. Males are in spherical heads, females in pairs within 4-lobed bracts which develop into cupules containing nuts.

Full sun - for best colour in purple beeches.

Partial shade - for yellow-leaved.

Additional Features - Good to know - - except for sylvatica require long, warm summers to thrive.
