HALIMODENDRON halodendron

Attractive, spiny, silvery leaved shrub with masses of purplish-pink pea flowers

  • Deciduous - pinnate, silver-grey leaves 2-3.5cm (¾ to 1½in) long each ending in a spine.
  • Shades of pink - All shades of pink through to Carmine (red) - purplish pink
  • Height - 2m (6½ft)
  • Spread - 2m (6½ft)
  • Medium shrub - Typically grow to around 4-6 feet in height - open-branched, spiny shrub. Flowers in axillary racemes to 4cm (1½in) long.
  • Hardy - cold winter - Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
  • Full sun
  • Additional Features - Good to know - an ideal windbreak for coastal areas.
  • Pests & Diseases - none
  • Place of origin - Ukraine, Georgia, northeastern Turkey, Iran, central and eastern Asia, Russia (southeastern Russia, Siberia)
  • Hardiness - Fully hardy
  • Soil Conditions - Neutral to alkaline soil
  • Well drained, dry, poor to moderately fertile soil - avoid winter wet.
