HARDY FERNS Matteuccia struthiopteris
Commonly known as Ostrich fern, Shuttlecock fern
Height - 1.7m (5½ft)
Spread - 1m (3ft)
Fern - rhizomatous fern, spreading by horizontal rhizomes producing new 'shuttlecocks' 10-20cm (4-8in) from the parent plant.
Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)
Partial shade - or light dappled shade.
Additional Features - Good to know - - good for moist shade in a woodland garden or at the edge of a pond.
