Commonly known as Chocolate vine
Semi-evergreen Keeps some of its foliage all year, and will drop some leaves as well.
Rounded leaves 4-8cm (1½-3in) long composed of 5 leaflets.
Purple Shades of purple/mauve/lilac/violet
Climber Some of these climbing plants will need trellis or wire supports if grown on walls or fences. Other grow aerial roots and are self-clinging
Twining climber. Flowers are followed by sausage-shaped fruit to 10cm (4in) long.
Hardy - cold winter Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
Good to know - introduced into UK by Robert Fortune in 1845. To ensure cross-pollination grow 2 plants of the same species (not of the same clone).

Suitable for: Evergreen shrubs or climbers that need little to no pruning.
Action: Trim back shoots that spoil symmetry and to fit available space.
When: Annually after flowering if on previous year's growth, or in later Winter or Spring if flowering on current year's growth, or as requires.
