Commonly known as Black alder, Common alder
Yellow catkins in March, suitable as a windbreak especially in waterlogged areas
Deciduous - dark-green leaves to 10cm (4in) long, sticky when young.
Height - 25m (80ft)
Spread - 10m (30ft)
Tree - yellow-brown male catkins 10cm (4in) long in groups of 3-5. Fruit, 2.5cm (1in) long in summer.
Hardy - very cold winter - Hardy in all of UK and northern Europe. Plant can possibly withstand temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F)
Additional Features - Good to know - the native alder. Wildlife plant - birds. Lasts indefinitely underwater. Makes good charcoal. Produced superior gunpowder. Was coppiced widely in north-east UK for clogs.
Pests & Diseases - Phytophthora root rot.
Place of Origin - Europe, northern Africa, western Asia.
