  • Deciduous - dark-green leaves to 10cm (4in) long, sticky when young.
  • Height - 25m (80ft)
  • Spread - 10m (30ft)
  • Tree - yellow-brown male catkins 10cm (4in) long in groups of 3-5. Fruit, 2.5cm (1in) long in summer.
  • Hardy - very cold winter - Hardy in all of UK and northern Europe. Plant can possibly withstand temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F)
  • Full sun
  • Broadly conical
  • Additional Features - Good to know - the native alder. Wildlife plant - birds. Lasts indefinitely underwater. Makes good charcoal. Produced superior gunpowder. Was coppiced widely in north-east UK for clogs.
  • Pests & Diseases - Phytophthora root rot.
  • Place of Origin - Europe, northern Africa, western Asia.
  • Soil Conditions - Fertile well drained soil
