Commonly known as Lemon plant, Lemon verbena, Lemon-scented verbena

(syn. triphylla) - (formerly LIPPIA) - lemon-scented foliage and pale lilac flowers

  • Deciduous - narrow lance-shaped bright-green leaves to 10cm (4in) long.
  • Purple - Shades of purple/mauve/lilac/violet - pale lilac
  • Height - 2m (6½ft)
  • Spread - 2m (6½ft)
  • Medium shrub - Typically grow to around 4-6 feet in height - bushy, upright habit.
  • Half hardy - unheated greenhouse / mild winter - Hardy in coastal and relatively mild parts of the UK except in severe winters and a risk from sudden (early) frosts. May be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or good micro-climate. Likely to be damaged or killed in cold winters. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F)
  • Full sun
  • Additional Features - Good to know - syn. A. citrodora. Culinary use and in pot-pourri. When dried fragrance becomes more intense. Wildlife plant - butterflies.
  • Medicinal properties - oil from the foliage and flowers is used to treat respiratory conditions. Crushed leaves are used to reduce indigestion and as a stimulant for depression.
  • Place of origin - Chile
  • Garden Location/Conditions - Greenhouse / conservatory - Not the sort of plants to be grown outside where there are likely to be frosts. These plants need to be grown in a conservatory or cool greenhouse or at least brought inside for the winter - if growing in greenhouse - loam based compost
  • Hardiness - Frost hardy (down to -5) -
  • Soil Conditions - Free draining sandy soil - poor, well-drained soil. Provide dry mulch in autumn to protect roots.
  • Wildlife - Butterfly friendly
