  • Deciduous - oval, tapered, dark-green leaves to 17cm (7in) long.
  • Red - wine red
  • Height - 2m (6½ft)
  • Spread - 2m (6½ft)
  • Medium shrub - Typically grow to around 4-6 feet in height - upright, thicket-forming shrub with attractive bamboo-like first-year shoots. Flowers are followed by spherical, red-purple berries
  • Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)
  • Full sun - shelter from cold winds.
  • Partial shade
  • Additional Features - Berries - These plants have berries.
  • Good to know - a subject popular in Victorian shrubberies. Wildlife plant - birds eat berries.

  • Resistant to honey fungus - These plants have little or few problems with honey fungus.
  • Flower Shape - Spikes - - pendent spikes to 10cm (4in) long, terminally, or from the upper leaf axils
  • Hardiness - Frost hardy (down to -5) -
  • Pruning group - Pruning group 2
    Suitable for: Deciduous shrubs and trees that flower in Spring or early Summer on previous year's growth, including plants that produce new growth at or near ground level.
    Pruning: Prune flowered shoots to strong buds. Cut back approximately 1/4 of old shoots to the base to promote replacement growth.
    When: Annually, after flowering.
