  • Good to know - 'acuminata' is more tolerant of alkaline soils.
  • Pests & Diseases - scale insects, honey fungus, coral spot.
  • Place of Origin - eastern North America. Introduced into Britain in 1736 by John Bartram.
  • Hardy - cold winter - Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
  • Height - 20m (60ft)
  • Spread - 10m (30ft)
  • Deciduous - oval to elliptic leaves, dark-green above, lighter and softly hairy beneath to 25cm (10in) long.
  • Tree - flowers, to 9cm (3½in) across, are produced amongst the leaves and are followed by red or brown fruit.
  • Fertile moist well-drained soil - humus-rich
  • Neutral to acid soil
  • Full sun - shelter from strong winds
  • Partial shade
  • Broadly conical
  • Flower Colour - Yellow - green-blue to yellow.
