MAGNOLIA stellata

Commonly known as Star magnolia




  • Good to know - growth slows after about 5 years.
  • Pests & Diseases - scale insects, honey fungus, coral spot.
  • Place of Origin - Japan
  • Scented flowers - faintly scented.
  • Height - 2m (6ft)
  • Spread - 3m (10ft)
  • Deciduous - obovate-oblong to inversely lance-shaped mid-green leaves to 10cm (4in) long.
  • Medium shrub - Typically grow to around 4-6 feet in height - compact and bushy, later spreading.
  • Hardy - very cold winter - Hardy in all of UK and northern Europe. Plant can possibly withstand temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F)
  • Fertile moist well-drained soil - humus-rich
  • Neutral to acid soil
  • Neutral to alkaline soil - will require regular mulching in autumn or spring if grown in alkaline soil.
  • Full sun - shelter from strong winds.
  • Partial shade
  • Flower Colour - White - sometimes tinged pink.
  • Flower Shape - Star-shaped - from silky buds. 12cm (5in) across with up to 15 tepals. Produced profusely before the leaves.
