The hardiest of all the metrosideros which grew at Caerhays for many years. Coppery-scarlet flowers. Much more tender when young as those who have pinched seedlings from Tresco discover to their cost

  • Evergreen - elliptic to ovate-oblong leaves 2.5-5cm (1-2in) long, dark green above and hairless and paler beneath
  • Red - coppery red
  • Height - to 30m (100ft)
  • Spread - to 12m (39ft)
  • Tall Shrub - or freely branching small tree. Produces flowers 3cm (1¼in) long with crimson filaments and yellow anthers in dense, terminal cymes.
  • Half hardy - unheated greenhouse / mild winter - Hardy in coastal and relatively mild parts of the UK except in severe winters and a risk from sudden (early) frosts. May be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or good micro-climate. Likely to be damaged or killed in cold winters. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F)
