Commonly known as Pawpaw
Large shrub with ovate leaves and peculiar purple flowers in MAY-JUN as the leaves emerge.
Deciduous - obovate, mid-green leaves to 30cm (12in) long, turning yellow in autumn.
Purple - Shades of purple/mauve/lilac/violet
Height - 6m (20ft)
Spread - 6m (20ft)
Tall Shrub - or small tree. Produces flowers 3-5cm (1¼-2in) across each with 3 large calyx lobes surrounding 6 petals, 3 large and 3 small. Flowers are produced singly or in small clusters. Edible fruit is bottle-shaped to 12cm (5in) long, yellow-green ripening to yellow-brown.
Hardy - cold winter - Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
